Box Score Brittney Stark scored the only goal of the game nearly three minutes into the second half and the University of Wyoming withstood a furious comeback attempt in the final minutes to escape Stewart Field with a 1-0 victory over Colorado College in the Mountain West opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.
Stark scored on a header off of Jessie Gentile's cross from the right side. Stark's shot from in front of the left post went back toward the right side.
Trailing for the first time in five games, the Tigers began playing with a sense of urgency and started generating scoring chances, especially during the final 15 minutes.
Freshman
Riley Prillwitz put a shot from the left side of the box just over the crossbar in the 78th minute.
CC nearly scored with just over five minutes to go, but a shot from the right side of the box grazed the post and came out from behind Cowgirl senior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree.
Colorado College had one final opportunity with 62 seconds remaining, but Rowntree smothered junior midfielder
Lauren Milliet's bending direct kick at the left post.
"It was a bad first half," head coach
Geoff Bennett said. "I had not seen us play like that this year. We have to battle and be scrappy, and we did neither today. After we got down 1-0, we showed some heart and that was encouraging."
Wyoming finished with a 12-9 advantage in total shots, while the Tigers had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Molly Hiniker made four saves for CC in her second start of the season.
Late in the first half, Hiniker came off her line to punch a direct kick by Taylor Burton out of harm's way.
Near the end of the 78th minute, she grabbed a shot by Michaela Stark off of a 2v1 situation.
"Molly made some big saves and handled herself well," Bennett said. "I wish we had played better in front of her. Wyoming is good at what they do."
Rowntree finished with four saves for the Cowgirls, who improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the MW.Â
