Underbrink Helps CC Top Centenary

Box Score Sophomore forward Evan Underbrink scored 12 points in the second half, including four after Centenary College had pulled to within two points on two occasions late in the fourth quarter, to help Colorado College hold off the Ladies, 63-59, on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers took a 45-44 lead when sophomore guard Jordan Meltzer hit a baseline jumper with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter and they utilized a 9-3 run to build a 54-47 cushion on a three-pointer from freshman winger McKenzee Gertz 53 seconds into the fourth quarter.

After the Ladies cut their deficit to 54-52 on a three-pointer by senior guard Samantha Lyons, Underbrink hit a jumper in the lane to put CC up by four.

Centenary was back within two after freshman forward Bre Frierson scored, but Underbrink grabbed an offensive rebound and her put-back gave the Tigers a 58-54 lead with 1:48 to go.

Colorado College, which sealed the victory by making five of six free throws during the final 29 seconds, improved to 5-11 overall. The Tigers currently are fourth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 2-3 record.

Junior guard Casey Torbet led CC with game highs of 17 points and five assists. She also recorded six rebounds, including three at the offensive end.

Nia Duplain grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who finished with a 44-37 advantage on the glass. The sophomore guard also added two steals and a pair of assists.

After hitting three of four free throws during the final 18 seconds, freshman guard Jade Odom finished with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Savanah Doty connected on four of 10 shots from behind the arc and led Centenary with 12 points. The junior guard also dished out a team-high four assists.

Frierson added 11 points for the Ladies, who slipped to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.

Sophomore guard Essa Bordon scored six of her nine points during the first quarter when Centenary led by eight points.

The teams will complete the season series on Sunday, Feb. 3, in Shreveport, La.

Colorado College wraps up its four-game home stand next week with games against Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
