Colorado College battled to a thrilling 1-1 draw at San Diego State University on Friday night and remains in the thick of the battle for one of six berths in the upcoming Mountain West Championship.
The Tigers are 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference, and are part of a three-way battle with UNLV and Fresno State for the final two playoff spots. The Aztecs are in eighth place, two points behind the battle for fifth place, while Colorado State still is technically alive.
San Diego State broke through in the sixth minute when Chloe Frisch took a through ball from Nikolina Musto and put a shot from the middle of the box into the right side of the net.
A little more than seven minutes later, CC leveled the score when
Kelli Sullivan deflected freshman forward
Jacqui Hand's ball from the top right past the SDSU goalkeeper Gabby English as the senior defender ran through traffic from the left side.
While neither team scored again during the final 97 minutes, fans were on the edge of their seats thanks to dangerous scoring opportunities, near misses and spectacular saves by both goalkeepers.
Jade Odom stopped a season-high eight shots for the Tigers, including a sensational diving save at the right post on Sarah Broacha's drive from the top of the box in the 69th minute.
Colorado College nearly took the lead in the 29th minute, but English made a diving stop at the right post on junior forward
Catie McDonald's shot from the left side.
Hand had a chance to put CC ahead in the 66th minute, but English was in the right spot when the Hand deflected senior forward
Lauren Milliet's cross from the left corner.
McDonald came within inches of giving the Tigers the lead when her shot missed the left post by inches, and then English came up big on Hand's drive from 20 yards just two seconds before the final horn sounded.
Despite going to overtime for the third time in the last four games, Colorado College finished with a 15-14 edge in total shots, while each team earned four corner kicks.
English finished with four saves for the Aztecs, who are 5-9-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the conference.
CC plays its final road game of the regular season at the University of New Mexico on Sunday at noon.
