Colorado College returned one of the top scoring lines in the country and scored 10 goals in its season opener Saturday night at Alaska Anchorage. Certainly surprising, and definitely encouraging, the trio of
Trey Bradley,
Mason Bergh and
Nick Halloran had zero goals on Saturday.
Â
Eight different Tigers did score, however, as CC opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 10-2 triumph over the Seawolves at Sullivan Arena. The 10 goals are the most in one game since defeating Mercyhurst by the same score on Nov. 30, 2002 and the most in a road game since a 10-1 triumph at Northern Michigan on Oct. 25, 1995.
Â
"For the first time we really feel we have four legitimate lines this year," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "It wasn't pretty at times but it was nice to see us score goals and make plays, and for our top line to not get any goals shows our depth."
Â
The Tigers allowed the first goal of the game at the 6:40 mark with a power-play tally by Jordan Xavier. From that point on, it was all CC, as the Tigers scored the next wight goals.
Â
Junior
Alex Berardinelli, who played in just 12 games last season due to a shoulder injury, buried a shot at the 8:46 mark, then freshman
Erik Middendorf notched his first career goal just 49 seconds later for a 2-1 advantage.
Â
"The goal by Berardinelli settled us down," Haviland said. "Once we responded, we realized we were in this thing and it was nice to get four in the first. But they did come out and put us on our heels."
Â
Senior
Westin Michaud scored the first of his two first-period goals at the 15:30 mark, then again with 1:16 remaining in the period. He added two assists to record the first four-point game of his career.
Â
The last time CC scored at least four goals in a period was nearly two years ago when it scored four in the first period of a 7-4 victory at UMass.
Â
The Tigers put up another 4-spot in the second period, starting with junior
Chris Wilkie, a transfer from North Dakota who sat out last season. While killing a penalty, Wilkie took a pass off the boards from freshman
Grant Cruikshank and beat Anchorage goalie Kristian Stead for a 5-1 advantage.
Â
Seniors
Ben Israel and
Trevor Gooch each scored his first of the season to make it 7-1 and Cruikshank scored while being hauled down in the slot for the team's eighth goal.
Â
With a commanding seven-goal lead, Haviland put sophomore goalie
Jon Flakne in for his first career appearance to start the third period, spelling junior starter
Alex Leclerc, who finished with 19 saves.
Â
"Jon is one of the hardest working young men we have," Haviland said. "He is absolutely loved by his teammates. He comes to work every day and it was nice to see him in there and reward him for his hard work."
Â
Gooch scored his second of the game at the 14:16 mark of the third period and freshman
Ben Copeland closed out the scoring with a power-play goal with four seconds remaining.
Â
The Tigers outshot UAA, 31-27, and were 1-for-6 on the power play, while 16 of CC's 19 skaters recorded at least one point. The Seawolves connected on one of their two power-play opportunities.
Â
The two teams will play again on Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at 7 p.m. (MT).
