Box Score Casey Gilling scored a power-play goal at the 2:19 mark of overtime to give 20
th-ranked Miami a 3-2 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
After CC's
Trey Bradley was assessed an interference penalty in the offensive zone just 37 seconds into the extra period, Gilling's shot from the high slot broke
Tanner Ockey's stick. The puck came right back to Gilling and he placed a wrister past Tiger goalie
Alex Leclerc.
Â
The Tigers (5-6-1, 1-5-0 NCHC) had a chance to win the game in regulation when Miami's Scott Corbett was called for interference with 1:50 left in regulation, but CC could not capitalize.
Â
"We missed an opportunity and (Miami) cashed in on it," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Other than that we played a pretty good game after the first. You got to find ways to win games like that."Â Â Â
Â
The RedHawks (9-5-0, 3-3-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period. River Rymsha scored from the left point at the 14:35 mark, then Derek Daschke scored on a rebound in front of the net with 1:04 remaining in the frame.
Â
CC battled back as
Mason Bergh scored shorthanded and on the power play in the second period. Following a hooking call to
Trevor Gooch, Bergh started a rush with
Cole McCaskill, who centered a pass back to Bergh in front of the net. Miami goalie Ryan Larkin made the initial save, but Bergh collected the rebound and scored to cut the Miami lead in half at the 4:02 mark of the second.
Â
Later in the period, Gilling and Christian Mohs were called for interference and hooking, respectively, at the 15:13 mark. Bergh scored his third of the weekend on the ensuing 5-on-3 power play, taking a cross-ice pass from
Nick Halloran and depositing a shot from the right circle past Larkin at 16:11 of the middle frame to even the score at 2-all.
Â
"He (Bergh) was outstanding," Haviland said. "Hopefully he is back to where he was and that gives him the confidence. I thought he could have had a couple more goals as well. That is a great sign for us."
Â
Colorado College outshot Miami, 26-14 in the second and third periods, including a 20-6 advantage in the second. The Tigers, who held a 36-26 shot advantage for the game, were 1-for-6 on the power play, while Miami was 1-for-4. Larkin finished with 34 saves, compared to 23 for Leclerc.
Â
The Tigers are idle until traveling to Omaha for a weekend series, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, at Baxter Arena.
