Colorado College dropped an 84-60 result to Johnson & Wales University in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Reid Arena.
CC built an early 11-2 lead and played from in front for nearly all of the first 12 minutes, but the veteran Wildcats utilized their full-court pressure to ignite a 36-14 outburst that gave the visitors control of the game. Â
After trailing by 20 points early in the second half, layup by junior forward
CooXooEii Black reduced the Tigers deficit to 49-33, but that proved to be as close as they would get.
Black led the Tigers with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman guard
Scott Cunningham posted season highs of 13 points and seven assists for Colorado College, which slipped to 4-4.
The Wildcats scored 36 points off CC turnovers and had a 32-12 advantage in fast break scoring.
JWU was 12-for-21 at the charity stripe, while the Tigers made two of their four chances.
Senior guard Jontrell Herman led the Wildcats with game highs of 21 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals.
Senior center Jordan Miles added 18 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots for JWU, which improved to 6-1 overall.
The teams will meet again on Feb. 16 in the regular-season finale in Denver.
Colorado College hits the road this week for games at No. 1 Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, Dec. 8, and at Grinnell University on Sunday, Dec. 9.
