Tigers Celebrate 2017-18 Season

Nine Colorado College hockey players received awards at the annual team banquet Wednesday at the Marriott Colorado Springs. The event celebrated the 2017-18 campaign, the fourth under head coach Mike Haviland. The Tigers finished the season with a 15-17-5 record and a fifth-place tie in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Sophomore Nick Halloran earned the team's top honor, the Thayer Tutt Most Valuable Player Award. Halloran, who also won the M.B. Hopper Award as the team's leading scorer, collected 45 points this season, one of seven Tigers to record a career high in points. The second-team All-American and first-team all-NCHC selection notched 19 goals and 26 assists, finishing third overall in the NCHC and tied for 15th in the country in scoring this season.

Junior co-captain Mason Bergh collected a pair of awards, winning the Scott Winkler and Paul Markovich awards. The Winkler Award honors the player that earns the respect of his teammates by showing humility, optimism and support through his love and appreciation for the game as well as his teammates. Winkler passed away unexpectedly in June of 2013 after completing his senior season at Colorado College. Meanwhile, the Markovich Award recognizes the program's top student-athlete. Bergh has a 3.85 cumulative GPA while majoring in economics.

Junior co-captain Tanner Ockey and junior assistant captain Andrew Farny shared the Steve Ebert Award, given for the combination of dedication, desire, ability and sportsmanship that Ebert exemplified during his time as a Tiger.

Fellow junior Trey Bradley earned the Rodman Award, given each year to the player demonstrating the highest degree of sportsmanship. The award was founded in 1980 by Dr. Hugh Rodman and his wife, Crete.

Junior forward Westin Michaud won the Dave Peterson Award as the most improved player after recording a career-high 24 points, while freshmen Christiano Versich and Zach Berzolla shared the Bob Johnson Award for the team's top freshman. Versich finished his first season with 21 points, the most by a Tiger freshman since Jaccob Slavin led the team with 25 points in 2013-14, and Berzolla finished the season with five points (1g,4a) and was third on the team with 37 blocked shots.

Sophomore goaltender Alex Leclerc was named the winner of the Tony Frasca Award for the postseason/playoff MVP. Leclerc shutout Denver, 2-0, in game one of the best-of-three NCHC playoff series, then recorded a career-high 46 saves in a 3-2 loss in game two. Leclerc's 15 victories this season were the most by a Tiger goalie since Joe Howe had 18 in 2010-11.

Nancy Luther, former athletic administration assistant at CC who succumbed to cancer last fall, was recognized as the winner of the Joni Brandner Memorial Award. Luther's husband, Glen, and daughter, Sara, accepted the award on Nancy's behalf. That award, initiated in 2001, is presented annually to individual(s) who have given their heart and soul through dedication to Tiger Hockey.
