Wheeler, Milliet Lead Tigers Past UNC

Sophomore defender Tayla Wheeler and senior midfielder Lauren Milliet clicked on a pair of set pieces to lead Colorado College to a 2-1 victory over the University of Northern Colorado in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night.

Trailing by a goal with time winding down in the first half, the Tigers leveled the score in the 31st minute when Wheeler scored on a header off of a Milliet corner kick.

The duo stunned the Jackson Stadium crowd with 25 seconds remaining before halftime on a nearly identical play to give CC the lead and Wheeler the first multiple-goal game of her career.

It marked the 10th time Milliet has factored in a game-winning goal during her career. She now has set up five game winners and scored five herself.

Milliet climbed into a four-way tie for 17th place on Colorado College's all-time list with 13 assists. She also joined Stevie Kernan (2002-04, 2006) and Ashley Hooverson (2001-04) in a tie for 25th with 43 career points.

Northern Colorado took a 1-0 lead late in the 17th minute when freshman forward Lexi Pulley scored off of a feed from senior midfielder Maddie Roberts.

Less than three minutes later, freshman forward Kiley Suter hit the post on CC's first shot of the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Odom stopped four shots for Colorado College.

Junior goaltender Jessica Smith made one save for the Bears during the first half. Freshman Taylor Washington played the final 45 minutes.

CC finished with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks while each team launched eight total shots.

Colorado College plays the second of its three Colorado Cup matches on Sunday against the University of Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the University of Colorado's Prentup Field in Boulder.
