Tigers Blank Denver in Colorado Cup

Jade Odom made five saves, including a pair of spectacular leaping stops, as Colorado College posted its first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Denver on Sunday at Prentup Field on the campus of the University of Colorado.

The Tigers improved to 2-0 overall and are on top of the Colorado Cup table with six points. Colorado (1-0-1) is second with four points, followed by Northern Colorado (1-1-0) with three.

Odom denied senior defender Christiana Behnken's drive from the top of the box in the 33rd minute when the sophomore goalkeeper tipped the ball off the crossbar and the Pioneers were unable to launch a hard shot on the rebound.

A little less than seven minutes later, the Tigers broke through when senior forward Rae Conlon collected a feed from junior midfielder Lucia Costanza in the center of the box and slotted a shot past Denver goalkeeper Brittany Wilson into the lower left side of the net.

Thanks to the efforts of Odom and the CC defense, Conlon's goal proved to be the first game winner of her career.

Colorado College tacked on an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Junior forward Catie McDonald collected a cross from Costanza and scored from the middle of the box.

Odom kept the clean sheet intact when she tipped a shot by DU first-year defender Esther Malers over the crossbar early in the 63rd minute. The Pioneers managed just two more shots in the second of half, neither of which were on target.

The shutout was the fourth of Odom's career.

The Tiger defense now has played 163:08 without allowing a goal since conceding a score in the first half of the Thursday's 2-1 victory in the season opener at the University of Northern Colorado.

CC finished with an 12-11 advantage in total shots, while DU had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Wilson stopped eight shots for the Pioneers, who dropped to 0-1-1.

The Tigers now have won three straight games against the Denver and extended its lead in the series to 19-7-1.

Colorado College plays its home opener on Friday, Aug. 24, against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. MT on Stewart Field.
