Second-ranked Tigers Improve to 15-0

The Colorado College volleyball team improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with four-set victories over Centenary College and Southwestern University on Sunday.

The Tigers began the day with a 25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14 win over Centenary and then came from behind to defeat the Pirates 17-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 and extend the program's conference winning streak to 21 matches.

Energized by a raucous home-court crowd, the Pirates took the first set behind four kills from both Jamison Duck and Landri Brown and they carried the momentum into the early stages of set No. 2. However, after taking an early 4-1 lead, the rest of the match belonged to CC.

Freshman outside hitter Isabella Vasquez put down four kills during an 8-1 surge that gave Colorado College its first lead. Then after Southwestern cut its deficit to 9-7, sophomore opposite hitter Laney Swan ignited a 12-3 run that put the set out of reach.

Junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling had three kills to help CC open a 6-1 lead in the third set, and that advantage swelled to 13-3 midway through the frame. The Pirates clawed their way back to within 16-8, only to see the Tigers close out the set by scoring nine of the final 12 points.

The final set was deadlocked at 9-9 when Colorado College went on a 7-1 run to take control. After Southwestern scored a pair of points, CC scored six of the next nine points to open an 11-15 lead.

Following a kill from Duck, the Tigers put the match away with an ace from junior outside hitter Haley Harris and a pair of kills from Spaethling.

Vasquez led Colorado College with 16 kills and hit .517 with only one error on 29 attacks.

Harris finished with 15 kills, nine digs and a pair of blocked shots, while Spaethling added 11 kills and had a hand in three blocked shots.

Senior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean had seven kills on 11 swings without an error.

Junior setter Lizzy Counts dished out 47 assists and produced 11 digs and a pair of block assists.

Junior defensive specialist Caitlin Laurence recorded 15 digs and a pair of aces.

As a team, the CC hit a season-best .427 against the Pirates.

Alyssa Dooley led Southwestern with 13 kills, while Duck added 11.

In the victory over Centenary, Swan led the attack with a career-high 15 kills. The sophomore opposite hitter hit .483 with just one error on 29 swings.

Steffey-Bean added 12 kills on 26 attacks and had a hand in five of Colorado College's seven blocked shots.

Laurence led the Tigers with a career-high 18 digs, while junior libero Anna Gurolnick added 14. Gurolnick also served up a season-best five aces, which matches the team's high set yesterday by Laurence.

The Ladies hit .076 for the match, becoming the 12th opponent to hit less than .100 against Colorado College.

Centenary took a set from CC for the first time in 13 tries, but the Tigers refused to let their opponent get any closer and held the Ladies to a -.065 percentage in the fourth and final frame.

Colorado College got out of the gates quickly by taking an 8-2 lead in the fourth set, and after Centenary cut its deficit to 16-14 on a kill by Alyssa Davis, tough serving by Gurolnick helped CC close out the match on a 9-0 run.

Davis led the Ladies with eight kills, but hit just -.032 for the match. Marissa Sandoval produced a match-high 19 digs.

The Tigers continue conference play next week when they travel to Irving, Texas, for another round of SCAC crossover matches. CC faces Trinity University on Friday, Sept. 28, and then Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University the following day.
