Last Time Out
Eighth-ranked Denver swept a pair of games against Colorado College in a home-and-home series, Dec. 13-14 ... On Friday, Denver scored three times in the third period and Devin Cooley made 24 saves to lead the Pioneers to a 3-0 victory at Magness Arena. Following a tripping call to
Nick Halloran 1:40 into the third period, the Pioneers struck first on the ensuing power play. Emilio Pettersen collected the puck to the right of CC goalie
Matt Vernon and placed the puck into the top corner from the goal line at the 2:23 mark of the final period. Cole Guttman put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 at the 6:57 mark of the third while the teams were skating 4-on-4. He took a pass from Pettersen at the left circle, skated past the crease and put a shot past a sprawling Vernon. CC had a couple of golden opportunities in the second period, with Halloran just missing an open net off a 3-on-1 rush early in the period, then
Bryan Yoon getting a great look from the right side of the net, but Cooley slid over to make a great save with 4:24 remaining in the frame.
Grant Cruikshank found himself all alone in front but was denied by Cooley just before Guttman's goal. Brett Edwards scored an empty-net goal with 56.8 seconds remaining for the final tally ... On Saturday, the Pioneers defeated CC, 3-1, at the Broadmoor World Arena. CC had plenty of chances to get on the board early, earning three power plays in the first 13 minutes of the game. Despite putting six shots on Denver goalie Magnus Chrona, the Tigers could not break through and the game was scoreless after 20 minutes. Denver controlled the second period, outshooting the Tigers, 18-6, and the Pioneers put a couple of pucks past Vernon. Bobby Brink opened the scoring at the 10:07 mark of the middle frame after taking a pass from Hank Crone and flicking a backhander past Vernon. Kyle Mayhew doubled the lead at the 16:23 mark when Pettersen found him all alone on the back side and he had an open net from the left side of the crease. The Tigers cut the Pioneer lead in half and notched their only goal of the weekend when co-captain
Alex Berardinelli put home a rebound from right in front of the net after Chrona saved a shot from the left boards by
Zach Berzolla. Following a tripping call to Cruikshank just 61 seconds into the third period, Guttman found the puck in a scrum in front of Vernon and pushed it over the goal line for a 3-1 advantage.
