The Colorado College women's cross country team entered the 2019 season with one goal in mind.
Â
Win the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
Â
That was going to be a tough task with such a young team, but after a couple of narrow misses the last two seasons, coupled with the fact that the conference meet was held in Colorado Springs, the Tigers spent the 2019 season looking forward to the chance of unseating Trinity University, the two-time defending champion.
Â
Not only did they achieve their goal of winning the title, they ran away with it, placing five runners in the Top 10 and upsetting Trinity by 13 points.
Â
Sophomore
Emily Dwyer, the 2019 SCAC Newcomer of the Year, finished second individually as the Tigers captured their first conference title since 2016. Dwyer covered the 6K course at Widick Field in a time of 23 minutes, 28.3 seconds.Â
Junior
Alexia Preston led a group of four Tigers that also placed in the top 10. Preston finished fifth overall with a time of 23:47.1, followed by freshmen
Na'ama Nevo (24:04.9) and
Clare Quinn (24:11.0) in sixth and eighth, respectively, and senior
Claire Tobin in ninth (24:24.3).
Â
Sophomore
Megan Koch and junior
Sarah Pokelwaldt also earned a spot on the all-conference team by finishing 12th and 14th, respectively.
Â
Two weeks later, the Tigers finished eighth at the West Region meet, with Preston and Dwyer earning all-region honors by placing 24
th and 30
th, respectively. Preston completed the 6K course in a time of 23.28.1, just ahead of Dwyer's time of 23:39.8.
Â
Preston, the team's Most Valuable Runner for the 2019 season, won the SCAC's Elite 19 award, given to the runner with the highest GPA that earns a spot in the all-conference team.
