The Colorado College volleyball team rebounded from a drama-filled five-set setback to Transylvania University to sweep Birmingham-Southern College and earn a split on the opening day of the 2019 Pikes Peak Challenge at Reid Gymnasium.
Allie Freeburg and
Georgia Mullins combined for 21 kills to lead the Tigers to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-16 victory over BSC in final match of the day that was delayed more than two hours due to the length of the three earlier matches.
Freeburg hit .320 with a match-high 11 kills, while Mullins had 10 kills and six blocked shots.
CC also got a huge lift from first-year outside hitter Meaghan Hohlman, who hit a sparkling .533 against the Panthers with nine kills on 15 swings with just one error.
Anna Gurolnick led the Colorado College defense with a match-high 13 digs.
The Tigers were red-hot in the first set, showing no signs of a letdown after coming out on the wrong end of a 28-26, 23-25, 26-24, 21-25, 17-15 result against Transylvania.
CC led 14-12 in the fifth set, but was unable to close out the victory.
The 'Instant Classic' also included pressure-filled comebacks by both teams.
CC overcame a 23-20 deficit in the second frame to level the match at one set apiece, while the Pioneers dug themselves out of an 11-8 hole in the fifth set.
Notes
Transylvania finished with a 15-9 advantage in blocked shots.
The Pioneers picked up their third win of the season over a top-25 opponents.

Georgia Mullins put down a career-high 19 kills and recorded four block assists.
Allie Freeburg produced a double-double with 15 kills and 19 digs.
Jordan Mullen had a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Isabella Vasquez posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. She also had a career-high seven block assists.
Transylvania Standouts (vs. Colorado College)
Ellie Stigger recorded 13 kills and nine block assists.
Taryn Glass led Transylvania with 14 kills.
Hannah Talkers led the Pioneers with a match-high 22 digs.
Birmingham-Southern Standouts (vs. Colorado College)
Julia Denby had seven kills and five blocks.
Milea Ray finished with seven kills.

The 2019 Pike Peak Challenge concludes on Saturday with a pair of matches. Birmingham-Southern tales on Transylvania at 11 a.m., followed by the tournament finale between Colorado College and Whitworth College at 1 p.m.
