The 18
th-ranked Omaha hockey team scored two power-play goals, two shorthanded goals and two even strength goals in a 6-1 victory over Colorado College Wednesday night at the NCHC Pod in Omaha, Neb.
Â
The Tigers, playing their second game, compared to the fifth for Omaha, had three power-play opportunities in the first period, but allowed a pair of shorthanded goals as the Mavericks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
Brandon Scanlin put Omaha on the board 5:32 into the first with a shot from the slot that beat CC goalie
Matt Vernon. Taylor Ward made it 2-0 at the 11:29 mark, when a shot by Jason Smallidge was saved by Vernon, but the puck hit the post and fell right on the goal line and Ward was there to knock it in.
Â
A couple of odd happenings led to the pair of Omaha shorthanded goals later in the period. First,
Ben Copeland slipped with the puck, giving the Mavericks a 2-on-1 and Nolan Sullivan's shot was initially stopped by Vernon, but was tipped in off a CC player's stick at the 13:29 mark.
Â
At that point, Vernon was replaced by freshman
Dominic Basse, making his first collegiate appearance. On CC's next power-play opportunity, defenseman
Jack Millar's stick broke and Jack Randl found himself all alone on a breakaway and beat Basse for a 4-0 advantage with 2:53 left in the first.
Â
The Tigers held their own in the second period, producing a number of good looks, including a couple right in front by defenseman
Bryan Yoon, and
Grant Cruikshank clanged a shot off the pipe midway through the period.
Â
Just 1:14 into the third period, Millar blasted a shot from the right point past Omaha goalie Isaiah Saville for his first collegiate goal to cut the Maverick lead to 4-1, but Omaha struck twice during a five-minute power play later in the period for the final margin.
Â
Basse finished with 22 saves and
Josiah Slavin collected his third assist of the young season, while
Zach Berzolla led all players with five blocked shots.
Â
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Dec. 11 against Western Michigan, beginning at 7:35 p.m. (CT).
