Tigers Battle to 3-3 Draw at Union

Colorado College scored a season-high three goals Saturday night and battled to a 3-3 draw with Union College at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.

Patrick Cozzi, Jordan Biro and Stanley Cooley scored for the Tigers, with Biro and Cooley each recording the first goal of his career. Logan Will posted a career-high two points with a pair of assists and attempted a career-best six shots.

The Tigers peppered Union goalie Connor Murphy early in the game, including a wrister by Tyler Coffey just seven seconds after the opening faceoff.

CC earned a power play within the first minute of the game and put five shots on net, but could not get one past Union goalie Connor Murphy. Hunter McKown, who scored CC's lone goal on Friday, hit the post during the man advantage, then Will connected with the iron during a shorthanded rush later in the period.

The Tigers, who recorded the first eight shots of the game, fought off a 5-on-3 deficit midway through the opening frame, but the Dutchmen converted on the power play later in the period. After Tommy Middleton was whistled for interference, Liam Robertson deflected a shot from Brandon Estes past Dominic Basse with 2:56 remaining to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.

CC buzzed the net early in the second period as well and Cozzi scored just 33 seconds into the frame to even the game at 1-1. Danny Weight attempted a wraparound shot that ended up in front of the net and Cozzi was there to clean it up for his second career goal.

Biro scored the first goal of his career to give the Tigers their first lead of the season at the 2:45 mark of the second. Biro found Will alone in front, but Murphy saved his shot and Biro put home the rebound from the slot for the team's first power-play goal of the campaign.

Union responded and took a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal by Chaz Smedsrud at 7:03 and an even-strength tally by Josh Kosack at 14:22, but Cooley posted his first career goal, a power-play tally at 15:57 of the middle frame to even it up once again. After Estes entered the penalty box for cross checking, Cooley won the ensuing draw back to Bryan Yoon, whose shot from the right point was saved by Murphy, but the Tigers pounced on the rebound and Cooley put it in from the right post.

Matthew Gleason hit the post five minutes into the third period for the Tigers' best chance of the final 20 minutes of regulation, then CC killed of a pair of penalties in the back half of the third period.

Gleason had a great look early in the 3-on-3 overtime period but his shot sailed just wide and Basse came up with a huge save off a partial breakaway from Collin Graf in the waning seconds of the extra frame.

Colorado College outshot its opponent for the fourth straight game, putting 38 shots on net, compared to 25 for Union. Murphy finished the game with 35 saves and Basse had 22.

The Tigers went 2-for-3 on the power play and killed off five of Union's seven power-play opportunities.

Coach Mayotte's Comments
"Our guys were resilient tonight. We haven't been able to score and finally in the second period we get an early two goals and go ahead 2-1. On the bench we had the feeling that it's finally happening. Then we give up the lead but we didn't give up. It was great for us to tie the game late in the second.

"We couldn't solve the PK early, but we found a way to kill the penalties in the third period. I'm proud of how we overcame adversity in the final 20 minutes."
