It took a little longer than hoped, but Colorado College head coach
Kris Mayotte collected the first win of his career Friday night as the Tigers rallied to stun 10
th-ranked Boston College, 5-3, at Kelley Rink.
Â
Colby Ambrosia gave BC a 3-2 lead just 10 seconds into the third period, but Tiger sophomores
Tyler Coffey,
Matthew Gleason and
Dominic Basse took over to secure Mayotte's initial victory. Â
Â
Less than two minutes after Ambrosia scored, Coffey picked up the puck in his own end, skated down the right side and fired a rocket from the right circle past BC goalie Eric Dop for his first career goal to even the game at 3-3.
Â
Later in the period, Gleason was taken down by Marshall Warren during a clean breakaway at the 7:55 mark and awarded a penalty shot. The left-handed Gleason glided down the right side, came in front of the net, stopped on a dime, then moved the puck to his backhand to beat Dop for the Tigers' first successful penalty shot since Alexander Krushelnyski converted in overtime to beat Denver on Dec. 2, 2011.
Â
Meanwhile, Basse finished the game with 40 saves, including 15 after Ambrosia's goal, and weathered one minute with BC having an extra skater until
Jackson Jutting, another sophomore, scored an empty-net goal with 35 seconds remaining for the final margin.
Â
"It was a big win for the guys," Mayotte said. "We felt we were playing winning hockey the last two weekends, we just weren't getting the results. There is a ton of resiliency in our locker room. We had a ton of guys step up tonight."
Â
The Tigers (1-2-2) were on the power play for a good portion of the first 11 minutes of the contest. Nearly five minutes into the game, BC's Sam Sternschein was whistled for a five-minute major for contact to the head and a game misconduct.
Â
A little more than halfway through the CC power play,
Connor Mayer bowled into Dop and was called for goaltender interference. With Mayer laying in the crease, the Eagles' Aidan Hreschuk cross-checked him twice and was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct as well.
Â
Five seconds after Mayer returned to the ice from serving his two minutes in the box,
Logan Will found
Jordan Biro all alone in the slot and Biro scored his second of the season for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
Â
Gleason and
Hunter McKown each hit the crossbar within five seconds of each other about seven minutes into the second period, then Will scored his first of the year after blocking a shot at the left point and going through Dop's legs off a clean breakaway for a 2-0 lead at the 9:13 mark of the middle frame.
Â
The Eagles (2-2-1) cut the lead in half when Gentry Shamburger scored at the 10:38 mark of the second. The puck came to Basse and it looked like he covered it up, but somehow it ended up in the net, then Nikita Nesterenko placed a shot from behind the net that went in over Basse's shoulder to even the game at 2-2 with 3:49 remaining in the period.
Â
Boston College outshot the Tigers, 43-20, the first game this season that CC was on the short end of that statistic. The Tigers were 1-of-4 on the power play, while the Eagles did not get a man advantage opportunity.
Â
The Tigers will take on No. 20 Northeastern University on Saturday at Matthews Arena in Boston, beginning at 5 p.m. MT.
