Tigers Aim to Retain Pikes Peak Trophy

This Weekend
Colorado College returns home after two weekends on the East Coast with a home-andhome series against Air Force for the Pikes Peak Trophy. The teams will play at Cadet Ice Arena on Friday, Oct, 29, beginning at 7 p.m., and at Ed Robson Arena on Saturday, Oct, 30, at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast in Colorado Springs on KRDO NewsRadio 105.5 FM and 1240 AM.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, the Tigers split a pair of games against Top 20 opponents on the East Coast ... On Friday, head coach Kris Mayotte collected the first win of his career as the Tigers rallied to stun 10th-ranked Boston College, 5-3, at Kelley Rink. Colby Ambrosia gave BC a 3-2 lead just 10 seconds into the third period, but Tiger sophomores Tyler Coffey, Matthew Gleason and Dominic Basse took over to secure Mayotte's initial victory. Less than two minutes after Ambrosia scored, Coffey picked up the puck in his own end, skated down the right side and fired a rocket from the right circle past BC goalie Eric Dop for his first career goal to even the game at 3-3. Later in the period, Gleason was taken down by Marshall Warren during a clean breakaway at the 7:55 mark and awarded a penalty shot. The left-handed Gleason glided down the right side, came in front of the net, stopped on a dime, then moved the puck to his backhand to beat Dop. Meanwhile, Basse finished the game with 40 saves, including 15 after Ambrosia's goal, and weathered one minute with BC having an extra skater until Jackson Jutting, another sophomore, scored an empty-net goal with 35 seconds remaining for the final margin. Two other sophomores, Jordan Biro and Logan Will, also scored as CC took a 2-0 lead in the first 30 minutes ... The following night, Jack Hughes scored the only goal of the game and Devon Levi had 25 saves to give 20th-ranked Northeastern a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Tigers at Matthews Arena. Hughes scored off a rebound after a shot by Jordan Harris from the right point was saved by CC goalie Dominic Basse with 5:57 remaining in the third period. Despite giving up the goal, Basse was great throughout the entire game, finishing with 28 saves, including some spectacular stops in the second period. After Basse faced just one shot during the Huskies' lone power play of the second period, he saved a point-blank shot from Ty Jackson and another in front of the crease by Sam Colangelo. The Huskies outshot CC, 20-13, in the first two periods, but the Tigers tried to get some momentum in the third and held a 12-9 advantage in shots the final 20 minutes. Colorado College had four shots saved by Levi in the final 2:14 with Basse on the bench in favor of an extra attacker.

First Career win for Kris Mayotte
Friday night's victory was the first for Kris Mayotte as a collegiate head coach. Mayotte, the 15th head coach in the history of the Colorado College hockey program, brought a wealth of success as one of the top assistant coaches and recruiters in the nation to Colorado College. Throughout his 10 years as a Division I assistant and associate head coach, he helped his teams to an NCAA National Championship in 2015, two Frozen Fours and seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

Basse Named NCHC Goaltender of the Week
Sophomore Dominic Basse was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week after backstopping the Tigers to a split against a pair of Top 20 teams last weekend. On Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect racked up 40 saves, including 29 in the final two periods, as the Tigers upset No. 10 Boston College, 5-3, to give head coach Kris Mayotte his first career victory. The following night, Basse allowed only one goal while making 28 stops in a hard-fought, 1-0 loss at No. 20 Northeastern. He also helped kill both Huskies power plays on Saturday, with the one goal allowed tying his career best. Basse totaled 68 saves on the weekend, facing 72 shots for a .944 saves percentage, while compiling a 2.04 goals-against average and earning his first win of the season.

The Pikes Peak Trophy
In 2013, Colorado College and Air Force established the Pikes Peak Trophy in memory of former CC and Falcons head coach John Matchefts. The winner of the season series between the two teams captures the trophy. If the season series ends in a tie, the team that holds the trophy will retain it. CC is in possession of the trophy after defeating Air Force twice during the 2019-20 campaign. The teams did not play last season.

In addition, he has won a pair of gold medals and a bronze in three stints as an assistant coach with Team USA at the World Junior Championships … Frank Serratore is in his 25th season with Air Force. He previously coached at Denver and has head coaching experience in the USHL and the IHL.
