Tigers Clinch Second Place In SCAC With Pair of Sunday Victories

The Colorado College volleyball team closed out the regular season with a pair of victories and clinched the second seed for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins this next weekend at Trinity University in San Antonio.

The Tigers breezed to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 victory over Centenary College to begin the day, but went the distance to record a 25-23, 16-25, 25-21, 9-25, 15-10 win over weekend host Texas Lutheran University.

Senior middle hitter Georgia Mullins shared match-high honors of 12 kills and added a match-high 12 digs to lead CC past Centenary.

Isabella Vasquez also had 12 kills and added six digs.

Keeley Kandziora finished with nine kills, while Isabella Lipacis put down eight.

Centenary led 11-10 in the first set, but rallied with a 5-1 run to take the lead it would not relinquish. The Ladies stayed within striking distance and were within 20-18 before the Tigers closed out the set with a 5-2 run.

In the second set, Colorado College snapped a 10-10 tie with a 15-4 barrage to take a two-set lead.

It was the same story in the third set when Centenary was within a point at 14-13 and then watched as the Tigers utilized a 7-3 edge to close out the match.

In the five-set thriller against the Bulldogs, Mullins led the way with 17 kills and completed her seventh double-double with 10 digs.

Isabella Lipacis had a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Vasquez also doubled up with 13 kills and 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Jenny Jenks dished out 45 assists and added 17 digs.

In the first set, the Tigers snapped a 15-15 tie with a 9-4 surge, and after TLU clawed its way back to within 24-23, Mullins closed out the set with her sixth kill.

Texas Lutheran built a six-point lead early in the second set and went on to tie the match, but CC never trailed in the third set to re-gain the lead.

After a decisive win in the fourth set, the Bulldogs appeared to have the momentum, but Colorado College scored the first four points. TLU pulled to within a point at 6-5, only to see the Tigers counter with a 4-1 surge to extend their lead to four points.

A Lipacis kill gave CC a 13-9 lead, and after a service error, a pair of Mullins gave the Tigers their second five-set victory of the year.

Mullins finished the regular season to 445 kills, which ranks seventh on the program's single-season list. She also became the sixth Tiger to record 100 or more block assists in a single season and now is fourth with 106.

Jenny Jenks, who finished the day with 1213 assists, became the third Tiger to record 1,200 or more in a single season, joining Amy Schornack (2010, 2011) and Lizzy Counts (2017) on the exclusive list.

The 2021 SCAC Women's Volleyball Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 5, at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
