Second Period Lifts Denver Past Tigers

Denver scored all five of its goals in the second period Thursday night and the Pioneers defeated Colorado College, 5-1, at the Broadmoor World Arena.

Magnus Chrona finished with 24 saves and added an assist as the Pioneers improved to 8-12-1.

The Tigers (4-15-2) came out on fire, putting shot after shot on Chrona. CC had seven shots, including four by Ben Copeland, on a power play five minutes into the contest, but couldn't find the net.

With CC on the power play to start the second period, Ryan Barrow found the puck as he exited the penalty box, cruised down the right side and his pass caromed off Copeland's stick past CC goalie Dominic Basse for the first goal of the game.

The Tigers suffered the same type of luck on DU's second goal as Hank Crone's shot was blocked by Zach Berzolla, who was laying on the ice in pain when Crone found Cole Guttman right in front of the net and Guttman flipped the puck over Basse's shoulder at the 3:43 mark.

Antti Tuomisto made it 3-0 at 6:32 when he knocked in a rebound off a shot from Kohen Olischefski, then Olischefski scored at the 15:56 mark and Justin Lee's blast from the right point with 1:22 remaining gave the Pioneers their fifth goal of the middle frame.

Matt Vernon replaced Basse (18 saves) at the second intermission and Brian Hawkinson scored his second goal of the year, both against Denver, with 6:07 left in the game.

Neither team connected on the power play and Denver held a 28-25 shot advantage.

The two teams will play on Saturday, Feb. 27, at Magness Arena, beginning at 7 p.m.
