The University of Dallas women's basketball team utilized torrid three-point shooting to avenge Friday's loss to Colorado College and set up a runner match next Saturday in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship at Reid Arena.
The Crusaders were 5-for-7 from behind the arc during the first quarter when they built a 27-15 lead after 10 minutes. CC closed to within a point midway through the second frame on a free throw by
Anna Fanelli, but that was as close the Tigers would get the rest of the game.
After trailing by seven at the half, Colorado College pulled to within 43-40 on a layup by
Audrey Bayston, but UD utilized a 15-6 surge to open a 12-point advantage after 30 minutes. The Crusaders sealed the win by making 10 of 14 free throws during the fourth quarter.
Bayston, a candidate for SCAC Newcomer of the Year, recorded the first double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Fanelli also scored 12 points, dished out six assists and produced a career-high six steals.
In a post-game ceremony, seniors
McKenzee Gertz and
Abby Walz were honored for the impact they had in making the Tigers a serious contender to win this year's SCAC championship as well as future conference and NCAA tournaments as well.
"The impact that McKenzee and Abby have made during their four years as Tigers truly can't be overstated," head coach
Katherine Menendez said. "From day one, they believed that this program could be one of the best in the conference and have worked to make that vision a reality.
"Securing a No. 2 seed in the SCAC tournament is a testament to their belief and we are all happy to have more time with both Abby and Mac on the court as we look to have a great post-season run."
In their last regular-season home game, Gertz recorded six points, three rebounds and a pair of assists, while Walz had two points, two rebounds and a steal.
Anika Herron made five of eight three-point attempts and led the Crusaders with 18 points.
