The Colorado College women's soccer team played a near perfect game against No. 20 Arizona State, but saw its effort go unrewarded thanks to an penalty kick with less than four minutes remaining in the second overtime.
Â
ASU's Nicole Douglas fell while cutting around a CC defender in the left side of the penalty area, and the referee pointed to the spot.
Â
Douglas put the ensuing penalty kick in the right side of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.Â
Â
The game was a statistical draw with the Sun Devils leading in total shots, 10-9, while the Tigers had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Colorado College's
Taryn Benham and ASU's Birta Gudlaugs each finished with four saves.
Â
CC's best scoring opportunities occurred 11 minutes into the second half on shots by
Lily Byrne and
Kiley Suter 45 seconds apart.
Â
Benham kept the game level in the 60th minute when she made a diving save on a Douglas shot from the right side of the box.
