Tigers Fall to St. Lawrence in Road Opener

Colorado College suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, falling to St. Lawrence, 5-1, at Appleton Arena.

Justin Paul scored twice, including the game-winning goal early in the second period and an empty-netter, for the Saints, who improved to 2-2 this season.

The Tigers, who fell to 2-1 after opening the season with a sweep of Alaska Anchorage at home, saw two of SLU's goals deflect off their own sticks in the defensive end and could not find the special teams magic they had last weekend. CC was just 1-for-6 on the power play after scoring five times with a man advantage against the Seawolves.

In fact, the Tigers had three power plays in the first period, including a 5-on-3 opportunity for 1:07, but the Saints killed off the penalties, then took the lead 12 minutes into the opening frame. Jordan Steinmetz carried the puck down the left side and his centering pass deflected off a Tiger stick and over the left shoulder of CC goalie Matt Vernon.

The Saints doubled the lead just 45 seconds into the second period when Paul scored a shorthanded goal. After a Tiger shot from the point was blocked, Paul battled his way past CC's Bryan Yoon and placed a shot through Vernon's legs.

Tyler Coffey scored his first of the season one minute later with CC still on the power play to cut the SLU lead in half. Coffey slid down the right side, took a cross-ice pass from Nicklas Andrews and put the puck into an open net past SLU goalie Emil Zetterquist.

Zetterquist was solid the rest of the way, stopping everything that came his way. He finished the game with 24 saves and helped the Saints kill off CC's final power play midway through the third period.

The Saints put the game away with three goals in the span of 1:08 late in the third period. Luc Salem scored at the 15:32 mark, followed by Josh Boyer at 16:16 and Paul closed the scoring with his empty-netter at 16:40.

St. Lawrence outshot the Tigers, 27-25. Paul had a team-high four for SLU, while CC's Gleb Vermyev led all players with a career-high five. Vernon ended the contest with 22 saves.

"I thought we started well tonight, "head coach Kris Mayotte said. "We drew some penalties by moving our feet, we just couldn't get the power play right. Then in the second period we started to mismanage the puck and a couple of bounces didn't go our way. They played their brand better tonight."

The teams will battle again on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Appleton Arena, beginning at 5 p.m. (MT),
