Ryan Beck scored his first career goal for Colorado College Saturday at Appleton Arena, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell to St. Lawrence, 4-1, in Canton, N.Y.
Â
Four different Saints scored and Emil Zetterquist made 25 saves as the Saints improved to 3-2, while the Tigers fell to 2-2.
Â
The Tigers thought they caught a break late with 3:15 remaining in the first period when Ashton Fry was whistled for a five-minute boarding penalty and game misconduct. Unfortunately, less than a minute into the CC power play, SLU's Aleksi Peltonen stole a drop pass from
Bryan Yoon, moved in all alone and put the puck through Tiger goalie
Kaidan Mbereko's legs for the Saints' second shorthanded goal of the weekend and a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Saints killed off the remaining 1:45 of the major to open the second period, but returned the favor and a turnover of their own led to the Tigers evening the score at the 8:12 mark of the middle frame. Zetterquist and a teammate fumbled the puck behind the net and
Stanley Cooley sent it out front where Beck sent a backhand into the net for his fourth point of the season.
Â
St. Lawrence took back the lead at the 9:54 mark when Luc Salem took a shot from the left circle that Mbereko stopped with his stick but the puck sailed up in the air and dropped in the crease, where Salem pounced on it and made it 2-1.
Â
The Saints went up by two goals with another goal off a rebound late in the period. Mbereko stopped but could not corral a Felikss Gavars shot from the top of the left circle and Tyler Cristall put in the rebound with 1:48 remaining.
Â
The Tigers couldn't get much going in the third period as they tried to rally and Cameron Buhl took a pass from Jan Lasak in front of the net and beat Mbereko at 7:29 of the third period.
Â
"We made bad mistakes at bad times and they are a tough team to come back on because they make it hard on you," head coach
Kris Mayotte said. "We didn't manage situations well, we didn't manage momentum well. We weren't really on until we scored. We have to get past that."
Â
St. Lawrence held a 36-26 advantage in shots on goal, with SLU's Justin Paul and CC's
Tyler Coffey leading the way with five apiece, and each team was 0-for-3 on the power play. Mbereko finished with a career-high 32 saves.
Â
Colorado College remains on the road and will play a weekend series at the brand new Mullett Arena against Arizona State, Oct. 21-22.
