Tigers' Rally Falls Short at Arizona State

Demetrious Koumontzis scored twice Jack Judson had a goal and an assist to lead Arizona State past Colorado College, 5-3, Friday night at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz.

The Tigers rallied from a 4-1 deficit with two goals in the last half of the second period, but couldn't put the tying tally on the board in the third and dropped their third consecutive contest after a season-opening sweep over Alaska Anchorage

Colorado College got on the board first when Nicklas Andrews' shot from the point got past ASU goalie T.J. Semptimphelter 5:03 into the contest. Bryan Yoon collected his team-high fifth assist of the season on the play.

Koumontzis evened things up with the first of his two first-period goals. With the Sun Devils on the power play, Koumontzis took a pass from Ty Jackson and beat Matt Vernon. Robert Mastrosimone scored from the left point at the 13:13 mark, then Koumontzis tallied his second with just 25 seconds left in the first to make it 3-1.

Ryan Alexander put the Sun Devils up by three just 1:46 into the second period, but a 5-minute major against ASU at the 8:44 mark put a spark into the Tigers.

Tyler Coffey connected on his second of the season after a beautiful crossing pass from Matthew Gleason with just over a minute left on the power play. CC then cut the deficit to one when Patrick Cozzi scored his first of the season with 1:54 remaining in the middle frame. Jack Millar's shot from the point was blocked in front and went right to Cozzi, who had an open net.

The game was back-and-forth in the third period, ut neither team scored until Judson connected with an empty-net goal with 52 seconds remaining.

The Tigers buzzed the Arizona State net for the entire second period, putting 19 shots on target, compared to just four for the Sun Devils. CC finished the game with a 32-27 advantage in shots.

The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 8 p.m. (MDT).
