For the second consecutive game, the Colorado College women's soccer team held a 3-0 lead. Last Thursday, San Diego State rallied for a 3-3 draw. On Sunday, the Tigers made it stick against New Mexico.
Â
Ally Wakeman had six saves, including three spectacular stops, and
Brett Tsamasfyros,
Shalom Prince and
Lily Byrne scored in the 3-0 victory over New Mexico at Stewart Field.
Â
With the team's first shutout of the season, Colorado College (4-4-3, 1-1-2 Mountain West) snapped a seven-match losing skid to the Lobos dating back to Sept. 23, 2016, a 1-0 win in Albuquerque, N.M. It also was the first victory over UNM in Colorado Springs since Oct. 5, 2001.
Â
Wakeman, who posted her second career clean sheet, was outstanding for the entire 90 minutes. She made a pair of incredible saves against UNM's prolific scorer, Jadyn Edwards, in the first 24 minutes to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Tsamasfyros opened the scoring in the 28
th minute by putting home a rebound past UNM goalkeeper Alli Davis after
Josie Morales hit the crossbar from distance on the right side.
Â
Prince notched her second tally of the weekend to double the lead with a clean header off a corner kick from
Kylie Smith in the 39
th minute. Prince, a transfer from the University of Oklahoma, is now second on the team with three goals.
Â
From then on, the Tiger defense was stellar in front of Wakeman. UNM attempted 16 total shots in the second half, but only two were on target. Edwards, who entered the game tied for the Mountain West lead with seven goals, did not have a shot on goal in the final 45 minutes.
Â
Byrne put the game out of reach with her second goal of the season. In the 58
th minute,
Emily Hitt sent a throw-in towards the box, which was headed by a Lobo defender right to Byrne, who fired a rocket from the top of the box past Davis.
Â
UNM's Presley Devey led all players with eight shot attempts, while
Alex Sandoval paced the Tigers with three. UNM (3-3-5, 1-1-2 MW) held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and each team had six corner kicks.
Â
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Oct. 6 on the road against Utah State.
