Tigers Shutout League-Leading Utah State

Adelaide Gaffney scored the game's only goal in the 23rd minute and Ally Wakeman made seven saves for her second straight shutout as the Colorado College women's soccer team defeated Mountain West-leading Utah State, 1-0, Thursday afternoon in Logan, Utah.

Colorado College, unbeaten in its last three games, improved to 5-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Mountain West, while Utah State fell to 5-4-5 and 2-2-1.

Gaffney scored on CC's lone shot on goal of the game, her team-leading fifth tally of the season. Lily Bryne started the play with a through ball to Jordan Darrow in the right corner. Darrow sent a cross into the box and Gaffney chipped it over the head of Utah State goalkeeper McKenzie Hunninghake, who suffered her first loss of the season.

Wakeman, meanwhile, was outstanding in the net for the second consecutive outing. After making six saves in the Tigers' 3-0 triumph over New Mexico on Sunday, the senior from Lawrenceville, N.J., did one better on Thursday, including five in the first 45 minutes.

"I am so proud of the effort of the team today," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "It was not the prettiest of soccer games but we grinded out a win against a talented Utah State team. We limited their chances and took advantage of ours. Now, our focus turns to recovery and preparing for Boise State."

The Aggies held a 13-4 advantage in total shots and 7-1 in shots on target. Sara Taylor led all players with three attempted shots, while four Tigers each had one. Each team had three corner kicks.

Colorado College heads to Boise State for a contest on Sunday, Oct. 9, beginning at noon. The Broncos defeated Air Force, 2-0, on Thursday.
