Williams' Late Goal Forces Draw With UNLV

Freshman Haley Williams scored her first career goal with 1:23 remaining in the second half as the Colorado College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against UNLV Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Williams, from Longmont, Colo., allowed the Tigers (6-5-5, 3-2-4 Mountain West) to remain in a tie with Boise State for the sixth and final playoff spot in the league standings with two games to play.

Kaelin Enga, who scored the only goal of the game in CC's 1-0 victory over Colorado State last Sunday, started the game-tying play by dribbling down the left side towards the goal line. She sent a centering pass that Shalom Prince redirected to Williams, who was all alone on the right side of the box. Williams one-timed the ball past UNLV goalkeeper Riley Liebsack.

UNLV (4-9-4, 2-3-4 MW) took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Mallie Ramirez took a crossing pass from Savannah Nichols and placed the ball past CC's keeper Ally Wakeman from right in front of the net.

Enga had a great chance to even the game in the 41st minute, but her header off a corner kick was stopped by Liebsack.

"I am proud of our team's effort tonight," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "They never quit. I thought we were a bit hesitant in the first half. We made one defensive error that cost us. We came out inspired in the second half and created several good attacks. Haley's goal was big time and will be very memorable for her. Now we refocus for Sunday."

The Tigers, who had struggled getting shots on goal in their last several games, turned the tables on Thursday, outshooting the Rebels 13-8 in total shots and 8-2 in shots on target. Defender Aspen Jeter led all players with three shots.

Zahra Cheeseman played the second half in relief of Wakeman and saved the only shot on goal for the Rebels during the final 45 minutes.

CC returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23, against the University of Nevada in Reno, beginning at 1 p.m. (MT).
