Last Time Out
The Tigers lost a pair of games at Arizona State last weekend in Tempe, Ariz. ... On Friday, Demetrious Koumontzis scored twice and Jack Judson had a goal and an assist to lead Arizona State past Colorado College, 5-3. The Tigers rallied from a 4-1 deficit with two goals in the last half of the second period, but couldn't put the tying tally on the board in the third. CC got on the board first when
Nicklas Andrews' shot from the point got past ASU goalie T.J. Semptimphelter 5:03 into the contest. Koumontzis evened things up with the first of his two first-period goals. Robert Mastrosimone scored from the left point at the 13:13 mark, then Koumontzis tallied his second with just 25 seconds left in the first to make it 3-1. Ryan Alexander put the Sun Devils up by three just 1:46 into the second period, but a 5-minute major against ASU at the 8:44 mark put a spark into the Tigers.
Tyler Coffey connected on his second of the season, then CC cut the deficit to one when
Patrick Cozzi scored his first of the season with 1:54 remaining in the middle frame. Neither team found the net until Judson's empty-netter with 52 seconds left ... On Saturday, Tim Lovell scored a goal and added a pair of assists to lead Arizona State to the sweep with a 6-1 victory. Things looked promising right off the bat for the Tigers, who were awarded a power play just 27 seconds into the contest following a slashing call to TY Murchison, but penalties to
Ryan Beck and
Danny Weight gave the Sun Devils a man advantage minutes later. After Murchison came out of the box, Ty Jackson opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal at the 2:42 mark. ASU doubled the lead at 9:30 of the opening frame when Ryan O'Reilly pounced on a rebound. ASU's Dylan Jackson was whistled for a 5-minute slashing major and game misconduct with four seconds remaining in the first, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize. The Sun Devils doubled their lead once again in the middle frame with goals from Teddy Lagerback and Jackson. Charlie Schoen scored for a 5-0 lead at 2:12 of the third period after a CC turnover in its own zone, then
Noah Prokop put the Tigers on the board with his first goal of the season just 14 seconds later. Lovell closed out the scoring with a power-play goal at 17:18 of the final period.
The Pikes Peak Trophy
In 2013, Colorado College and Air Force established the Pikes Peak Trophy in memory of former CC and Falcons head coach John Matchefts. The winner of the season series between the two teams captures the trophy. If the season series ends in a tie, the team that holds the trophy will retain it. Colorado College is in possession of the trophy after defeating Air Force, 8-1, at Robson Arena last season.
The Coaches
Kris Mayotte is in his second season at the helm of the Tigers. He came to Colorado College after serving two years as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. Mayotte was an assistant coach for Providence College when the Friars won the NCAA Division I title in 2015. In addition, he has won a pair of gold medals and a bronze in four stints as an assistant coach with Team USA at the World Junior Championships … Frank Serratore is in his 26th season with Air Force. He previously coached at Denver and has head coaching experience in the USHL and the IHL. Serratore became the seventh active college hockey with 400 victories at his current institution with a victory over Holy Cross in 2019. Â
