Tigers Battle to 1-1 Draw With Miami; Win Shootout For Extra Point

Matthew Gleason scored and Kaiden Mbereko had 22 saves to lead Colorado College to a 1-1 tie with Miami University Friday night in Oxford, Ohio. The Tigers won the shootout, 1-0, to claim the extra point in the NCHC standings.

Ryan Beck scored on Miami goalie Ludvig Persson in the first round of the shootout as the Tigers moved to 4-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NCHC. The RedHawks, meanwhile, are now 4-5-2 and 0-4-1.

Both goalies were spectacular during the 65 minutes of regulation and 3-on-3 overtime. Persson finished with 35 saves, including 17 in the second period. Mbereko, meanwhile, made nine of his 22 saves in the third period, including a couple to help kill off a five-minute penalty when Danny Weight was whistled for contact to the head with 6:40 left in regulation.

Red Savage opened the scoring with a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 6:37 mark of the first period. Savage took a pass from Matthew Barbolini and was past everyone, then beat Mbereko for his fourth tally of the season.

Gleason evened the score with his second of the year at 13:31 of the middle period. After Miami's Artur Turansky was called for hooking, the Tigers took advantage and scored their third power-play goal of the season on the road. Nicklas Andrews slid down the right side and sent a centering pass into the crease that Gleason pushed past Persson.

"The second period may have been our best period of hockey this season," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "We had a lot of positive things tonight and I'm really proud of our guys."

Neither team scored in the third period and Mbereko stopped all four RedHawk shots on the power play. The Tigers put five shots on Persson during the five-minute 3-on-3 period but couldn't capitalize.

The Tigers held a 36-23 advantage in shots and was 1-for-4 on the power play. Miami was blanked in five man-advantage opportunities.

The same two teams battle on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Oxford, beginning at 3 p.m. (MT).
