Tigers Edge Miami, Take 5 of 6 Points From RedHawks

Tyler Coffey and Hunter McKown each scored a power-play goal and Kaidan Mbereko allowed just one goal for the second consecutive game as Colorado College defeated Miami University, 2-1, Saturday in Oxford, Ohio.

The Tigers improved to 5-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NCHC and took five of six points from the RedHawks during the weekend. Colorado College extended its unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2) against Miami.

Coffey opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at the 14:12 mark of the first period. With the Tigers on the power play, Matthew Gleason sent the puck to the net where it was deflected by Stanley Cooley across the crease to Coffey, who had an open net past Miami goalie Ludwig Persson. All three of Coffey's goals have come on the power play this season.

Speaking of power-play goals, McKown scored his nation-leading seventh of the season with just 36 seconds left in the middle period. Ryan Beck's shot from the right circle was saved by Persson, but the rebound glanced off Gleb Veremyev in front of the net right to McKown, who had his own open net from the bottom of the left circle.

Mbereko was outstanding throughout the weekend, but no more than in the third period on Saturday as the Tigers were outshot 15-2 during the frame. The only goal he gave up was to Hampus Rydqvist just 36 seconds into the final frame, but the freshman from Aspen, Colo., kept the other 14 Miami shots out of the net.

The Tigers were 2-for-6 on the power play and killed all four of their penalties. Miami was 0-for-9 on the power play during the weekend.

Miami outshot CC, 35-22, and Mbereko equaled his career high with 34 saves. He has allowed just four goals in his last four games.

The Tigers return home to host fourth-ranked St. Cloud State next weekend, Nov. 18-19, at Ed Robson Arena.
