Colorado College scored a pair of power-play goals Friday night, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit and 12
th-ranked North Dakota defeated the Tigers, 3-2, at Engelstad Arena.
Â
The Tigers came out on the prowl, putting a pair of shots on net in the first minute and then received a fortunate call early in the contest.
Â
A successful challenge by the Tiger coaching staff and review by the officials gave CC a 5-minute power play just eight minutes into the game with a contact to the head major penalty and game misconduct to UND's Connor Moore.
Â
However, the Fighting Hawks (16-11-1, 11-5-1 NCHC) struck first when Judd Caulfield collected the puck at his own goal line, flew down the left boards, eluded a Tiger defender and cut to the net. Colorado College goalie
Dominic Basse got his stick on Caulfield's shot, but the puck went over his shoulder for a shorthanded goal at the 9:02 mark of the opening frame. Basse kept the home team from doubling its lead when a stopped Caulfield on a clean shorthanded breakaway a few minutes later.
Â
"It was a good start for us, then we give up the shorthanded goal and two breakaways on the power play," head coach
Kris Mayotte said. "We just weren't ready to execute the special teams right away."
Â
UND's special teams kept it up during the rest of the first period as Ethan Frisch scored one second after a CC penalty expired and Riese Gaber scored a power-play goal with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle for a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
The Tigers (7-17-3, 4-12-1 NCHC) clamped down defensively and clawed back in the second period to close the gap to one with a pair of power-play goals of their own.
Â
Stanley Cooley notched his third of the year and got CC on the board at the 9:39 mark when he deflected a shot by
Nicklas Andrews past Zach Driscoll. Cooley won the draw after an interference call to Nick Portz, then slid to the front of the net and got just enough of Andrews' shot to put it in just five seconds into the power play.
Â
Then, at the 14:44 mark, Andrews fired a blast from the blue line that cleanly beat Driscoll seven seconds after Jackson Kunz was whistled for cross checking.
Jordan Biro won the draw, and
Brett Chorske found Andrews alone at the point.
Â
"I thought we took over in the second period," Mayotte said. "We gave up eight shots in the last two periods combined."
Â
CC outshot North Dakota, 18-8, over the final 40 minutes and did not allow a shot on goal during a third-period Fighting Hawk power play. The Tigers could not capitalize with an extra attacker on the ice for the final 2:31 with Basse (18 saves) on the bench. Driscoll finished with 24 saves for North Dakota.
Â
The Tigers were 2-for-3 on the power-play, their first game with multiple power-play goals since Jan. 7, a 5-1 victory over Miami.
Â
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Feb. 12, beginning at 5 p.m. (MT).
