Gleason, Coffey Lift Tigers to Season Sweep of Miami

Matthew Gleason scored 27 seconds into overtime Saturday to give Colorado College a 3-2 victory and season sweep over Miami University at Robson Arena.

Gleason, appearing in his second game back after missing eight contests due to an injury, crashed the net after Logan Will sent the puck towards the crease. Gleason got his stick on it and shot the puck towards the net. The puck caromed off Persson and slid past the goal line to give the Tigers their first four-game sweep of an opponent since the 2007-08 season.

"Man, him and Coz (Patrick Cozzi), holy smokes they just buzz," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "It's like the Energizer bunny. They don't run out of energy ever.

"You keep working, you keep going in the dirty areas and he (Gleason) gets rewarded with the game-winner. He brings so much. He brings an energy not just the way he plays but with his personality. He just drives a line. He can drive a game and we missed that."

Tyler Coffey scored twice, giving him five goals against the RedHawks this season, and Matt Vernon had 25 saves as the Tigers extend their advantage over Miami to four points in the NCHC standings.

Coffey opened the scoring at the 10:50 mark of the opening period. Jackson Jutting (two assists) took the puck behind the net and found Coffey in the slot. Coffey, who had a hat trick against Miami on Jan. 7, put the puck in the open net as Persson was still looking behind the net.

CC's Tommy Middleton was whistled for a 5-minute major for contact to the head and a game misconduct with 1:56 remaining in the first period, and the RedHawks took advantage early in the second period.

Matt Barry sent the puck to the front of the net and Chase Gresock deflected it past Vernon 53 seconds into the middle frame to even the score.

Hampus Rydqvist gave the RedHawks the lead at the 12:42 mark of the second when his seeing-eye shot from the high slot snuck past Vernon.

Coffey was determined to get the Tigers back in the game. He led all players with a career-high seven shots and evened the game at 2-2 with a wrister from the right circle that went between Persson and the near post with 12:48 remaining in the third period. Brett Chorske collected an assist on each of Coffey's goals.

The goalies took over the rest of regulation, setting up Gleason's second career game-winning goal.

After the teams combined for 87 shots on Friday, the offenses were held in check for the most part on Saturday. The Tigers outshot Miami, 38-27, and Persson finished with 35 saves.

Colorado College heads back out on the road to face St. Cloud State next weekend, Feb. 25-26, in St. Cloud, Minn.
