McKown's Hat Trick and Game Winner Beats Miami in Overtime

Hunter McKown posted his first career hat trick, including the game-winning goal with 15.4 seconds left in overtime, to lift Colorado College to a 4-3 victory over Miami Friday night at Robson Arena.

Brett Chorske also scored and Matt Vernon had a season-high 35 saves for the Tigers, who posted their first overtime victory and second one-goal win of the season.

McKown opened the scoring with 24.1 seconds left in the first period with his 11th goal of the season. He fired a wrist shot past Miami goalie Ludwig Persson after taking a feed from Brian Hawkinson.

The RedHawks took the lead with a pair of power-play goals in the second period. P.J. Fletcher scored at the 3:51 mark of the middle frame with a one-timer from the right circle, then Matt Barry scored from the left circle with  just 27 seconds remaining in the period to put Miami on top.

Colorado College couldn't capitalize on either of its two five-minute power plays, one in the first period and one in the second. Each time, the Tigers took a penalty of their own to wipe out two minutes of each.

In addition, each goalie had a spectacular save in the second. Persson robbed Jordan Biro in the first minute, while Vernon made an acrobatic stop on Chase Gresock midway through the period.

Brett Chorske tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period, but Fletcher gave Miami the lead again with another power-play goal at the 7:48 mark.

McKown wasn't about to let this one get away, however, and he tied the game with his second of the night midway through the final frame.

It looked like Chorske gave CC the lead with just under five minutes to play, but his goal was disallowed after the refs took a closer look and deemed he made contact with Persson.

"We executed our game plan as well as we can early," head coach Kris Mayotte said. "We found a way to tie it up in the third and finally got one from our power play. We think we get the go-ahead goal late, but stayed strong. We played to win the game in overtime."

The Tigers outshot Miami, 5-0, in the extra period and McKown ended it with a nasty wrist shot from the slot to cap his career night.

"Hunter has been taking those strides physically where he is attacking the game," Mayotte said. "There aren't many guys in the country that can beat goalies from 45 feet away. He's one of those guys."

CC attempted a season-high 49 shots on goal, the most in one game since putting 49 on goal against Vermont on Dec. 8, 2018. Persson finished with 45 saves.

Miami was a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play, while the Tigers were 1-for-5.

The teams battle again on Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at 6 p.m., at Robson Arena.
