Tigers Rally Again to Post Weekend Sweep

Freshman Erin Ewers scored twice and sophomore Brett Tsamasfyros added the first goal of her career to lead the Colorado College women's soccer team to a weekend sweep of Patriot League teams with a 3-1 victory over Army Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

The Tigers improved to 3-1 this season, while Army fell to 1-2-1.

The match was stopped twice due to lightning, the first a 1 hour, 45 minute delay after the teams played just over nine minutes. Following the restart, 15 minutes was played before another 30-minute delay.

Nearly 10 minutes after the second restart, Army's Keira Vesy put the Black Knights on the board with a 40-yard free kick that cleared CC goalkeeper Ally Wakeman's arms and just under the crossbar.

Less than two minutes later, in the 38th minute, Ewers evened the score with the first tally of her career. Emily Hitt took a free kick from the right side that an Army defender headed back towards the goal line. Army keeper Sage Strohman tried to corral the ball to avoid a corner kick, but it popped loose and Ewers was right there with an open net.

Just like she did during CC's 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Bucknell on Friday, Tiger head coach Keri Sanchez made a move in net at halftime as Zahra Cheeseman replaced Wakeman (one save).

Tsamasfyros put the Tigers ahead for good with her first career goal in the 55th minute. She took a pass in the middle of the field from Gracie Huebner and fired a rocket from 30 yards out that cleanly beat Strohman into the upper right corner of the net.

Ewers scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute. Risser sent a corner kick to the far post that Haley Williams headed across the box and Ewers finished it from the right side. Williams collected her team-high third assist this season.

Ewers led all players with three shots on goal as the Tigers held an 11-5 advantage during the match. Williams, Tsamasfyros and Shalom Prince each had a pair of shots on target. Cheesman made three saves in the second half, while Strohman had eight for Army

The Tigers continue their four-match homestand on Thursday, Sept. 1, against Southeast Missouri State, beginning at 6 p.m., at Stewart Field.
