Despite getting outshot by a 24-3 margin and only placing two shots on goal, the Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team made the most of those shots and defeated Colorado College, 2-1, Thursday night at Stewart Field.
Â
The Redhawks (3-2) got on the board early as Faith Liljegren scored just 1:21 into the contest. Liljegren took a crossing pass from Alayna Jakul and placed a shot from the right side of the box past CC goalkeeper
Ally Wakeman.
Â
From that point, the Tigers (3-2) took control of the play and had several chances to tie the game throughout the rest of the first half. Sophomore
Kaelin Woodruff fired a shot that SEMO keeper Sophia Elfrink got a couple of fingers on and then it clanged off the crossbar, while senior
Jordan Darrow's header from point blank hit squarely off the left post.
Â
CC finally evened the score in the 40
th minute when a pair of newcomers connected for the first time this season. Freshman
Kylie Smith sent a corner kick into the box that junior transfer
Shalom Prince headed home for her first career goal. The tally also marked Smith's first career point.
Â
The Redhawks did not attempt a shot following Liljegren's goal until the 56
th minute when Megan Heisserer scored the game-winner on her team's second shot of the contest. Heisserer took a pass on the ground from Zoe Houston, turned and fired a left-footed shot that eluded CC backup keeper
Zahra Cheeseman, who allowed her first goal of the season.
Â
Once again, the Tigers controlled play after the Redhawks took the lead and allowed just one other shot for the remaining 34 minutes. Meanwhile, CC attempted 11, including a free kick by Cheeseman with 33 seconds remaining in the contest that rang off the right post.
Â
Junior
Lily Byrne attempted a team-high four of CC's 24 total shots, followed by Prince, sophomore
Kaelin Enga and freshman
Erin Ewers with three apiece.
Â
Elfrink finished with six saves, while the Tigers' two keepers did not register a save.
Â
The Tigers wrap up their four-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 4, against Texas A&M-Commerce, beginning at noon.
