Montgomery, Millar Lead Tigers Past Union in Season Opener

Drew Montgmery scored twice and added an assist in his first career game and Jack Millar collected a career-high three assists Friday night to lead Colorado College past Union College, 7-3, in the regular-season opener at Ed Robson Arena.

Union's Chaz Smedsrud opened the scoring just 2:53 into the contest. Josh Nixon's shot was blocked by Chase Foley directly in front of the Tiger net, but Smedsrud was there to poke it past CC goatender Kaidan Mbereko.

Ethan Straky evened things up for CC at the 14:00 mark of the opening frame. Gleb Veremyev sent a centering pass from the left corner to Straky, who was all alone in the slot and cleanly beat Union goalie Kyle Chauvette.

The Tigers exploded for five goals in the second period, including three in a span of 49 seconds, all by freshmen. Zaccharya Wisdom made it 2-1 at the 6:50 mark by deflecting a shot by Max Burkholder, followed by a deflection by Riley Stuart at 7:22 and an impressive individual effort by Montgomery at 7:39.

Millar assisted on Stuart's and Montgomery's tallies, then picked up his third helper of the night on Tyler Coffey's goal to make it 5-1 at the 9:00 mark of the middle frame.

Tommy Middleton extended the lead to five at 17:25 when he exited the penalty box, gathered the puck at center ice and placed a wrister past backup goalie Joe Sharib.

The Garnet Chargers scored a pair of goals in the third before Montgomery finished the scoring with an empty-netter in the final two minutes.

Mbereko finished the game with 29 saves as CC outshot the Garnet Chargers, 35-33. Chauvette had 15 saves before giving way to Sharib, who had 13.

The teams will battle again on Saturday, Oct. 14, beginning at 6 pm.
