Tigers Complete Sweep of Long Island

Zaccharya Wisdom scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Evan Werner notched two assists to lead the Colorado College hockey team to a 3-2 victory and weekend sweep over Long Island University Saturday night at Ed Robson Arena.

The Tigers move to 4-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season and collected their first four-game winning streak since late in the 2012-13 campaign.

The Tigers struck just 1:22 into the contest. Werner's shot from the right circle was deflected by Tyler Coffey in front and went past LIU goalie Rico DeMatteo. Stanley Cooley also collected an assist on the play.

Freshman Max Burkholder notched the first goal of his career with a power-play tally at 15:05 of the opening frame. Burkholder took a pass from Chase Foley and fired a rocket from the left circle that cleanly beat DiMatteo.

The Sharks battled back with a goal just 53 seconds later by Josh Zary, who knocked in a rebound after CC goalie Kaidan Mbereko saved a shot from Isaiah Fox, then Chris Pappas evened the score with 1:59 left in the frame with a wrister from the left circle.

Wisdom put the Tigers ahead for good at the 5:46 mark of the second when he collected the puck after an LIU turnover and deposited a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle past DiMatteo for his second goal of the season.

It was the Mbereko show after that as the sophomore from Aspen, Colo., made 16 of his 25 saves following Wisdom's goal, including several from point-blank range late in the second and during the final frame.

Each team finished with 27 shots and Tiger captain Logan Will led all players with a season-high five.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 27, in the annual Battle for the Pikes Peak Trophy against Air Force at Cadet Ice Arena, beginning at 6 p.m.
