Alexander Ward scored the game's only goal in the 34
th minute to give the Colorado College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Schreiner University on Sunday and secure at least a share of the 2023 SCAC title and the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament in two weeks.
Â
The Tigers, who last won the SCAC regular-season title in 2019, improved to 11-2-1 and 6-0 in league play with their eighth consecutive victory.
Â
Ward took a pass from
Teddy Libby, moved to the middle of the field and fired a rocket from 20 yards past Schreiner keeper Matthew Shaw. Colorado College dominated the game, outshooting the Mountaineers, 28-3, in total shots, and 11-2 in shots on target. Shaw finished the game with 10 saves.
Â
Ward and
Oliver Ramirez led all players with four shots apiece, and goalkeeper
Jasper Broad saved shots on goal for Schreiner in posting his fifth shutout of the season.
Â
"It feels fantastic to gain a share of the conference title and secure the top seed at the SCAC Tournament," head coach
Scott Palguta. "The guys are going to enjoy that and take a day off, then get right back to work as all we are thinking about is our next match. There are no easy games."
Â
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 27, against Austin College in Sherman, Texas, beginning at 7 pm (MT). One win or a tie next weekend vs. Austin or the University of Dallas will secure the outright SCAC regular-season title.
