Laba Leads TIgers Past Simon Fraser in Exhibition

Noah Laba scored twice and the Colorado College hockey team tallied five goals in the final two periods to defeat Simon Fraser University, 6-3, in an exhibition game Saturday evening at Ed Robson Arena.

Tyler Coffey opened the scoring at the 8:04 mark of the first period. He intercepted a cross-ice pass at the red line, cut to the middle and his wrist shot from the slot hit Red Leafs goalie Andrew Henderson in the shoulder and snuck behind him into the net.

Tristen Cross evened the score with a power-play goal just 51 seconds into he second period, but Tiger captain Logan Will put CC up for good just 30 seconds later. Will won a face-off back to freshman defenseman Max Burkholder at the right point. He wheeled around the net and found Will all alone on the back side with an open net.

Laba extended the lead at the 5:29 mark. Ryan Beck started the play with a shot that Henderson saved. Bret Link retrieved the puck in the corner, moved along the boards and found Laba, who scored from point-blank range.

Tyler Dunbar scored 1:52 into he final frame off a rebound after Henderson saved a shot from Stanley Cooley, then Laba notched his second of the contest at the 9:15 mark. With the Tigers shorthanded, Connor Mayer found Laba along the left boards. Laba split a pair of Simon Fraser defenders while cutting to the middle and placed a shot over Henderson's shoulder.

The Red Leafs scored a couple of power-play goals after Laba was tossed from the game, but Bret Link scored an empty-netter with 44 seconds remaining for the game's final goal.

After allowing 17 shots on goal in the first period, the Tiger defense clamped down in the final 40 minutes, giving up just 15 the rest of the way. Kaidan Mbereko had 21 saves before giving way to Henry Wilder at the beginning of the third period.

The Tigers open the 2023-24 regular season on Friday, Oct. 13, against Union College at Robson Arena, beginning at 7 p.m.
