UNLV Uses Late Goal to Edge Tigers on Senior Day

Cassie Villanueva posted a goal and an assist, including the game-winning tally in the 84th minute, to lead the UNLV women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Colorado College Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Stewart Field.

Villanueva scored the game winner after Regan Wallace saved back-to-back shots by Mallie Ramirez and Elizabeth Bautista. The Tigers could not clear the ball and Villanueva put it in the back of the net.

The Tigers played the final 16 minutes with 10 players after Kaelin Enga received her second yellow card of the contest and was sent off the pitch. CC mustered just one shot on goal during those final 16 minutes.

CC senior Shalom Prince, playing her final game at Stewart Field, put the Tigers ahead 1-0 in the 49th minute with her third goal of the season. She took a pass from Alex Sandoval and placed a left-footed shot from the top of the box past UNLV goalie Hanne Bruer, who replaced starter Lucia Guemes at halftime. Guemes came back in for Breuer in the 65th minute due to injury.

Trinity Buchanan evened the game in the 60th minute, putting in a rebound after Wallace made a save on Villanueva.

It appeared the Tigers took a 2-1 lead when Gracie Huebner put the ball in the net then collided with Breur, but after a lengthy discussion, the referee assessed a penalty to Huebner and waived off the goal.

Each team attempted nine shots, with CC holding a 6-5 advantage in shots on target. Guemes made five saves for UNLV, while Wallace had three for the Tigers.

Prince and fellow seniors Lily Byrne and Haley Harnisch were celebrated following their final contest at Stewart Field.

Colorado College returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Colorado State, beginning at 3 p.m.
