Luke Grainger had a hand in all three goals and Cameron Rowe made 25 saves to lift 16
th-ranked Western Michigan past Colorado College, 3-1, Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Â
Grainger scored his fifth goal of the season and added a pair of assists as the Broncos improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the NCHC. The Tigers saw their two-game winning streak end and fell to 7-4-0 and 2-3-0.
Â
Grainger opened the scoring at the 16:32 mark of the first period. Following a scrum with seemingly all 10 skaters in the CC crease, the puck slid out to the slot where Grainger put a shot top shelf over Tiger goalie
Kaidan Mbereko.
Â
The Tigers killed off a tripping call to
Ray Christy with 2:47 remaining to close out the initial period.
Â
Ryan Beck evened the score at 6:22 of the second period with his second goal of the season.
Logan Will sent a shot towards the net from the far boards and a streaking Beck knocked it out of the air past Rowe from right in front of the net.
Â
During a CC power play late in the middle frame, the Tigers nearly punched in a shot from the side of the net, but the officials seemed it did not cross the goal line, then
Evan Werner had an open net but cranked a shot off the left post as the penalty expired.
Â
A slashing call to WMU's Daniel Hilsendager put the Tigers on another man-advantage situation midway through the third.
Â
Rowe made a nice save on
Noah Laba early in the Tiger power play, and Werner had another great opportunity at an open net, but whiffed on a shot from the right side while breaking his stick on the post. Werner hadd another good look a few seconds later, but Rowe made the save.
Â
Alex Bump, who assisted on Grainger's goal, broke the deadlock with 3:35 remaining in the final frame with the game-winning goal. Grainger found Dylan Wendt, who took a shot from the top of the left circle that Mbereko saved, but Bump put home the rebound from the slot.
Â
Wendt sealed the game with an empty-net goal at the 18:09 mark, assisted by Grainger and Chad Hillebrand.
Â
The teams will battle again on Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 6 p.m.
