The Colorado College men's basketball team hung on late in a grind-it-out win against the Pacific Boxers in Forest Grove, OR. on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Tigers led at the half and fought off a second-half comeback by the Boxers to win 79-77.
Â
Edgar Romero led the team with 15 points in only 18 minutes on the floor. Two other Tigers,
Scott Ruegg and
Adrian Price, scored in double digits. Ruegg went 4-5 from the floor for 14 points, while Price scored 12 points in only 12 minutes played.Â
"I'm so proud of our team," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "This is all them. They met as a team this afternoon, and you could see the difference. We had tons of contributors and tons of humility. They played hard and together tonight! They showed great grit and toughness in response to Friday."Â
Â
It came down to the wire yet again for CC as they improved to 2-2 and fought off a Boxer team that scored 46 points in the second half and 47 percent from the floor.Â
Â
CC led the way at the halftime break 44-31 and could hold onto the lead down the stretch thanks to some clutch plays at the glass and a solid job breaking the press Pacific was applying. Ruegg scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half.Â
Â
The bench also played a big part, outsourcing the Pacific bench 42-26.Â
Â
The Boxers cut the 16-point halftime lead down to two with 2:28 left to play, but some clutch buckets by
Dinari Boykin and
Trey Crawford kept the game out of reach. Then
Edgar Romero made two clutch free throws with five seconds left on the clock to put the game away and give the Tigers their second win of the season.Â
"Pacific is a good team and it was a great environment," Conarroe said. "Our guys responded every time Pacific made a run. They got the turnovers down and assists up, and played excellent defense in one of the best PGs in the country. I'm very proud of this group and excited about the future."Â
Â
CC finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field, including 7-17 from three-point range. The Tigers outrebounded the Boxers 41-33 as
Asher Nofziger led the team with seven swipes. CC also had seven blocks defensively compared to Pacific's two.Â
Â
The Tigers will return to the road next weekend down in San Antonio, Texas, to take on Hardin Simmons University on Saturday, November 25.Â
