The Colorado College men's basketball team is coming home after going 1-1 on their trip to San Antonio, TX, after downing Concordia (TX) on Sunday, Nov. 26, with a final score of 82-74.
Junior guard
Scott Ruegg put up a season-high 21 points after shooting 7-12 from the field. Sophomore
Dinari Boykin recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Tornadoes.
"I'm proud of our effort today," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "For the third week in a row, we responded on the second day with marked improvement over after a loss. While we have some glaring issues we need to fix, we also have some fantastic positives we got going with our rim protection and our rebounding. Our FT shooting and shooting overall was much better."
CC got off to a great start in the first half, shooting 51.35 percent and making nine three-pointers heading into the halftime break. The Tigers took the lead with 17:31 remaining in the half and never looked back.
The Tigers held the Tornadoes to 36.67 percent from the field, and only one made three-pointer in the first half.
"Concordia has a tough style of play and a very fast and athletic team," Conarroe said. "In the first half, we really played our most disciplined and unselfish basketball of the season. It was beautiful, now we have to do it for more than a half. This team has a high ceiling, excited to see what they do."
At the break, it was a 52-35 advantage the CC didn't let go of as the game went on. The defense prevailed in the second half, holding Concordia to a 35.90 shooting percentage in the latter 20 minutes.
CC built the lead up to 19 points with 13:03 remaining in the game. They would keep it a double-digit lead until the very last play of the game when the Tornadoes made a three-pointer to cut it down to eight. It was too little too late as CC improved to 3-3 with the win and will play five of their next seven games on home court.
After the starting five recorded only 26 combined points the day prior against Hardin Simmons, they bounced back and accounted for 58 points, with three starters scoring in double digits.
Ruegg led all scorers with his 21 points but also performed defensively with three steals and five boards.
Trey Crawford came off the bench and swatted four blocks to match his six points and ten rebounds.
The Tigers outrebounded the Tornadoes 48-32. Beyond the arc, CC was a combined 11 of 24 (45.8 percent).
CC will play an exhibition game against D1 opponent, the University of Denver, in Denver on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. They will return to Reid Arena to host Belhaven on Dec. 9 at 4 p.m.
