The Colorado College men's basketball team faced off against the University of Northern Colorado in an exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 6 and ultimately fell 87-58. The Tigers showed a lot of positives to prepare for the actual season opener against Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Sophomore
Asher Nofziger and junior
Adrian Price both led the team with nine points. Nofziger went 4-8 from the floor and also collected four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Price shot 60 percent from the floor (3-5) while leading the team with six boards and a block.
The Tigers got out to an early 10-7 lead, taking advantage off some loose balls that turned into points, and then back to back three pointers from Nofziger and
Scott Ruegg gave CC their biggest lead of the night. The Bears would eventually take control of the game going into halftime.
At the break, CC was down 40-26 and couldn't regain the lead. Despite the scoring differential, the Tigers battled well on the boards only being out rebounded 46-43 with 13 of those swipes being on the offensive side of the court.
"For our first outside competition I was proud of our effort tonight and how we competed," Head Coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "We missed a bunch of open shots in the first half that I expect us to make and if a few of those go down we are right in the game."
The Tiger bench scored 34 points as all 14 players saw time on the court, including freshmen
Ty Hendler and
Christian Drummond, who combined for 14 points. Drummond went 2-4 from three-point range including a buzzer beater as the second half game clock expired. Senior
Trey Crawford played a team-high 20 minutes racked up four points, four boards, an assist, a block and a steal.
It was a competitive and physical game all 40 minutes. The game had 42 combined personal fouls with the Tigers producing 28 of them.
"We have to work on fouling less and get our turnovers down, our defense must improve as well. But overall we played really hard and I was happy with that," Conarroe said. "Northern Colorado was big and physical and it was an even game on the glass and we won a majority of the 50/50 balls. We have a lot to work on but we really like this team! Our depth caused them some problems and if we stay together it will be our greatest asset."
The Tigers will officially kick off the regular season, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday and Rhodes College on Sunday.
