Last Time Out
The TIgers dropped a pair of games to second-ranked Denver last weekend ... On Friday, DU rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three goals in the second period for a 6-1 victory at Magness Arena.
Evan Werner put the Tigers ahead 1-0 with his team-high fourth goal of the season.
Connor Mayer started the play deep in the CC end. He found
Gleb Veremyev along the left boards and Veremyev flicked the puck to Werner, who moved to the middle and cleanly beat Denver goalie Freddie Halyk with a wrister from the slot just 6:09 into the contest. The Tigers had a great chance to extend the lead but could not capitalize on a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the first period. The Pioneers took over the game in the second period, scoring three times, including a shorthanded goal, and outshooting the Tigers, 23-5. Shai Buium evened the score at the 4:56 mark of the middle frame, Tristan Broz gave Denver the lead for good at 7:32 with a blast from the right circle, then Carter King scored with the home team shorthanded at 10:32. Jack Devine notched a pair of goals and Jared Wright added one in the third period for the final margin ... The following night at Robson Arena, Pioneers retained the Gold Pan with a 5-1 victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,749. Boston Buckberger opened the scoring just 1:46 into the contest with a one-timer from the right circle. The Tigers roared back to even the score at the five-minute mark of the opening frame when Veremyev forced a turnover, took a pass from
Logan Will and was all alone on a clean breakaway against Denver goalie Freddie Halyk. Veremyev beat Halyk stick side for his fourth goal of the season. For the second consecutive night, Denver dominated the middle frame, scoring twice and outshooting the Tigers, 11-4. Miko Matikka put the Pioneers ahead for good with a power-play goal at 10:13, taking a pass from Shai Buium and beating Mbereko from the slot. Sam Harris made it 3-1 less than two minutes later. CC was handed a five-minute power play four minutes into the third period thanks to a boarding call against Tristan Broz. The Tigers mustered just one shot on goal and Mbereko stoned a breakaway by Jared Wright before
Zaccharya Wisdom was whistled for tripping with 1:04 remaining in the Tiger power play. Denver's Carter King scored a power-play goal at the 9:42 mark of the final frame to make it 4-1, then assisted on Wright's goal that deflected off a CC defender's skate and past Mbereko at 10:44 for the final goal of the game.
