Tyler Weiss scored 3:16 into overtime Friday night to give 16
th-ranked Omaha a 3-2 victory over Colorado College at Baxter Arena.
Â
The Tigers mounted a furious comeback after trailing 2-0 late in the second period, but Weiss scored just seconds after
Hunter McKown was called for tripping at the 3:12 mark in the extra frame. Cameron Berg won the ensuing faceoff and Davis Pennington found Weiss, who fired a shot from the top of the slot that beat CC goalie
Kaidan Mbereko.
Â
Earlier in overtime, the Tigers'
Noah Laba was pulled down during a partial breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. However, Laba lost control of the puck in front of the net and could not get a shot off.
Â
Mbereko was stellar between the pipes once again, making 36 saves for Colorado College (10-16-1, 6-10-1 NCHC), including seven in overtime. The Tigers did collect one point in the NCHC standings by forcing overtime and moved into a sixth-place tie with North Dakota.
Â
Ty Mueller opened the scoring for Omaha (15-10-2, 10-6-1) at the 15:48 mark of the first period. Mbereko made a spectacular save against Jack Randl off a 2-on-1 rush, but Mueller scored on the rebound.
Â
The Mavericks doubled their lead at 7:58 of the second period when Kaden Bohlsen beat Mbereko with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.
Â
The Tigers cut the lead in half late in the middle frame with a 5-on-3 power play goal.
Logan Will sent a perfect pass from the right circle to Laba, who was camped along the left post and put it home for his ninth goal of the season.
Chase Foley also recorded an assist on the play.
Â
McKown evened things up with his national-leading 11
th power-play goal at the 8:23 mark of the third period. Will sent another outstanding pass to McKown, who fired a one-timer from his favorite spot, the left circle, that cleanly beat Omaha goalie Simon Latkoczy (26 saves).
Â
The Tigers connected on two of their four power plays and scored their first power-play goal since Jan. 13 against St. Cloud State. Omaha was 1-for-3 with a man advantage.
Â
The teams will battle again on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
