Last Time Out
The TIgers had an overtime loss and shootout win last weekend against No. 16 Omaha at Baxter Arena ... On Friday, Tyler Weiss scored 3:16 into overtime to give Omaha a 3-2 victory. The Tigers mounted a furious comeback after trailing 2-0 late in the second period, but Weiss scored just seconds after
Hunter McKown was called for tripping at the 3:12 mark in the extra frame. Cameron Berg won the ensuing faceoff and Davis Pennington found Weiss, who fired a shot from the top of the slot that beat CC goalie
Kaidan Mbereko. Earlier in overtime, the Tigers'
Noah Laba was pulled down during a partial breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. However, Laba lost control of the puck in front of the net and could not get a shot off. Mbereko was stellar between the pipes once again, making 36 saves for Colorado College, including seven in overtime. Ty Mueller opened the scoring for Omaha at the 15:48 mark of the first period, then Kaden Bohlsen doubled the lead at 7:58 of the second period. The Tigers cut the lead in half late in the middle frame with a 5-on-3 power play goal.
Logan Will sent a perfect pass from the right circle to Laba, who was camped along the left post and put it home for his ninth goal of the season. McKown evened things up with his national-leading 11th power-play goal at the 8:23 mark of the third period. Will sent another outstanding pass to McKown, who fired a one-timer from his favorite spot, the left circle, that cleanly beat Omaha goalie Simon Latkoczy ... On Saturday, Mbereko tied his career high with 40 saves and Laba sent the game to overtime with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to force a 2-2 tie. The Tigers gained the extra point after
Ryan Beck and
Noah Serdachny scored in the shootout and Mbereko saved both shots he faced. Mueller put the Mavericks on the board first for the second consecutive night at the 4:54 mark of the second period. Beck evened things up with a clean breakaway goal at the 13:20 mark of the middle frame.
Jack Millar sent a clearing pass from his own goal line that eluded a pair of Omaha players and went right to Beck, who deked Latkoczy before beating him with a backhander for his second goal of the season. The Mavericks regained the lead during a 5-on-3 advantage at 16:25 of the second. Jack Randl took a pass from Weiss and scored from the right circle. Mbereko kept it a one-score game with a save on a breakaway by Omaha's Michael Abgrall midway through the third period, then Laba evened it up with his second goal of the weekend as the Tigers had an extra skater on the ice. During a scrum in front of the Omaha net, Laba flipped the puck over Latkoczy with 16.8 seconds left. Omaha challenged the play being offside, but the play held up. Since the home team had taken their timeout, the Tigers opened the overtime period with a power play.
