Tigers Battle But Fall to #23 Southwestern

The Colorado College women's tennis team battled SCAC for and 23rd-ranked Southwestern University, 9-0, Thursday in Georgetown, Texas.
 
The Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The best contest was at the No. 2 spot, where Alli Ziehm and Taylor Despriet downed Lindsay Popeo and Gigi Jensen, 8-6.  
 
In singles play, Southwestern won all six matches in straight sets, including the No. 1 poistion, where Nina Mitrofanova, ranked 11th in the West Region, downed Popeo, 6-4, 6-1. Emma Kesterson, ranked 24th in the region, captured the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-1, over Magdalene Gonzales and Ziehm defeated Abby Wilson, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6. The Pirates did not lose more than two games in any of the other three matches.
 
"We knew this would be a tall task," head coach Anthony Weber said. "Southwestern is one of the best teams in the country and tough from top to bottom. We are looking forward to the rest of the trip."
 
The Tigers return to action on Friday, April 14, against SCAC-foe Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas, beginning at 1 p.m. (MT).
