Tigers Fall to Louisiana Tech in Season Opener

Erin Ewers scored her third career goal, but it wasn't enough as the Colorado College women's soccer team opened its 2023 season with a 3-1 loss to Louisiana Tech Thursday night at Stewart Field.

Ewers scored the Tigers' lone goal of the game, cutting the Bulldog lead to 2-1 in the 55th minute. The ball popped to Ewers at the top of the box and she blasted a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and in the net past Louisiana Tech keeper Laerke Holst.

Laura Ogando opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she took a pass from Kalli Matlock and volleyed a shot from the middle of the box past freshman keeper Regan Wallace.

Sophomore Makenna Kolson nearly evened the game for the Tigers late in the first half, but her shot from 25 yards went directly off the crossbar, and freshman Tyler Rose's rebound was saved by a diving Holst.

Lauren Egbulonio doubled the Bulldog lead in the 51st minute. She raced down the right side, took a pass from Carmen Suarez and beat junior goalie Zahra Cheeseman, who entered the game at halftime in place of Wallace.

Following Ewers' goal, Sophie Fijneman scored the game's final goal in the 88th minute when her free kick from 30 yards out on the right side took one bounce in the box and found its way into the net.

The Tigers outshot Louisiana Tech, 18-10, including a 12-5 margin in the second half. Ewers, Kolson and senior Shalom Prince each had three shots for CC, which held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Holst finished the game with four saves for Louisiana Tech, while Cheeseman had one for CC.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday, August 20, against in-state rival Denver beginning at 12 p.m., at Stewart Field.
