Tigers Hit The Road to Battle Colorado and Kansas

TIGERS HIT THE ROAD THIS WEEK
The Colorado College women's soccer program plays its first two road matches of the 2023 season this week. The Tigers travel to Boulder on Thursday, Aug. 24, to take on the Colorado Buffaloes at 7 p.m., then to Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday, Aug. 27, to battle the Kansas Jayhawks at 12 p.m. (MT). Thursday's contest will be streamed live on the Pac-12 Insider, with Sunday's on ESPN+.

OPENING WEEKEND
The Tigers opened the 2023 campaign with a pair of games at Stewart Field. On Thursday, CC fell to Louisiana Tech, 3-1, in the season opener. Sophomore Erin Ewers scored the Tigers' lone goal, while freshman Regan Wallace and junior Zahra Cheeseman each played one half in the net. On Sunday, Colorado College and the Denver Pioneers battled to a 2-2 draw. Seniors Shalom Prince and Alex Sandoval scored, with Sandoval notching the first goal of her career. Wallace played all 90 minutes and collected a career-high seven saves, including several spectacular stops late in the second half to keep the match tied.   

SECOND YEAR FOR HEAD COACH KERI SANCHEZ
Keri Sanchez was named the eighth head coach in the history of the school's Division I women's soccer program in December of 2021. Sanchez, who won four NCAA National Championships as a player at the University of North Carolina, led the Tigers to a 7-7-5 record and their first appearance in the Mountain West Tournament since 2018. She brought 25 years of coaching experience to Colorado Springs that spans Division I and Division III. During her standout professional career, Sanchez played at the highest level. She notched 13 caps with the United States Women's National Team and played in the first-ever World Cup qualifying tournament in 1991.

2023 CAPTAINS
Seniors Shalom Prince and Alexis Wessler and junior Kaelin Enga have been named team captains for the 2023 season.

SEASON OPENERS
Colorado College is now 26-11-2 all-time record in Division I season openers after falling to Louisiana Tech last Thursday.

FOR THE RECORD
Colorado College is 0-1-1 entering this week's matches. Colorado is 1-1 after defeating Northern Colorado, 3-0, in its season opener and falling to Marquette, 1-0, on Sunday, with both games in Boulder. Kansas is 1-0-1 this season entering its match against Vanderbilt on Thursday in Lawrence. The Jayhawks opened the campaign with a scoreless draw at Wisconsin, then defeated Loyola-Chicago, 4-1, Sunday in Chicago.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. OPPONENTS
Colorado College is 2-10-1 in 13 previous meetings against Colorado. The teams haven't played since 2017, when the Buffaloes claimed a 1-0 overtime victory in Boulder. Meanwhile, Kansas holds a 3-0-1 advantage against the Tigers, with the last meeting also in 2017, a 2-0 Jayhawk victory in Lawrence.

A LOOK AT THE TIGERS
Prince, Sandoval and Ewers lead the Tigers with one goal apiece, while senior Haley Harnisch and freshman Tyler Rose each have an assist. Prince leads the team with five total shots and three on goal. Wallace has a 2.0 goals-against average and .700 save percentage after two matches.

A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
Lila Dere, Shyra James and Phoenix Dawn Miranda each have a goal for Colorado this season. Jordan Nytes has played all 180 minutes in net with a 0.5 GAA and .875 save percentage. Meanwhile, four Jayhawks, Hallie Klanke, Lexi Watts, Magali Gagne and Montelene Dymond each have a goal, while Klanke has an assist for a team-high three points for Kansas. Goalkeeper Melania Pasar has allowed just one goal and has 12 saves.

UP NEXT
Colorado College travels to to the East Coast to take on Bucknell on Thursday, Sept, 7, in Lewisburg, Pa., beginning at 5 p.m. (MT). Three days later, on Sunday, Sept. 10, the Tigers play at Army, starting at 11 a.m. (MT).
